What Is a Pigment?

Pigment refers to solid particles, usually insoluble, that give color to materials. They create their colors based on the reflection and absorption properties of light. Pigments are commonly used to color products such as paints, plastics, and masterbatch.

Pigments are divided into two main groups:

• Organic Pigments: Composed of carbon-based compounds. They generally have brighter and more vivid colors and are especially preferred in the plastics, paint, and ink industries.

• Inorganic Pigments: Composed of naturally based compounds. Due to their matte and more durable structure, they are frequently used in exterior paints, construction chemicals, and the building industry.

Where Are Pigments Used?

Pigments do more than just provide color; they also affect the appearance, durability, and quality of products. Here are some industries where pigments are widely used:

1. Paint Industry

Pigments are one of the main components in paints and coatings. In addition to color tone, pigment quality also plays a decisive role in properties such as UV resistance, opacity, and surface gloss.

2. Plastics Industry

Pigments are used in products such as plastic packaging, hoses, tarpaulins, and household items for both aesthetic and functional reasons. Pigments resistant to high temperatures and sunlight are especially preferred.

3. Masterbatch Production

The dispersion quality and color vibrancy of pigments used in ink production directly affect print quality.

4. Construction Chemicals

Inorganic pigments are also frequently preferred in ceramics, tiles, concrete, and decorative coatings. In these areas, pigments resistant to light, water, and chemicals should be chosen.
